It is based on the Big Brother series produced by Endemol. From 2000 on seasons of Big Brother were shown in both Norway and Sweden and in both countries the show enjoyed very high ratings, so high that eventually the production teams of both began thinking about joining together to make one Big Brother show for both countries. So in 2005 they joined forces. The 2006 edition was also a co-production between Norwegian and Swedish Big Brother. The Heat Is On is a BBC talent show that was a regular fixture on the Saturday night schedule between 1990 and 1994. The show was originally hosted by comedian/impressionist Bobby Davro, with his catchphrase of "They're in heat, so vote with your feet!" sweeping the nation. Davro left the show in 1993 after a Sunday tabloid published an expose on his cocaine-fuelled prostitute orgies. Despite this setback though the programme continued to be a ratings winner and the show was nominated in six categories at the Baftas ceremony later that year. After continuing with a succession of guest presenters the show was eventually cancelled in late 1994, after an unfortunate incident during filming for that year's Christmas special. Producers of the show have included former presenter Chris Kelly. Notably, a six year old Dylan Mills appeared as a performer on the show. His five minute act included an array of circus skills.

The Continental was a 1952 CBS television series starring Renzo Cesana in the title role. The 15-minute program was shown on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15pm, at the end of the night's prime time schedule. The series used a subjective camera, as Cesana spoke directly to women in the viewing audience in a suave manner, with each episode a different romantic rendezvous, accompanied by lounge music played on an electric organ. Occasionally, he would recite the lyrics to a song. In an era when advertisers and advertising agencies played major roles in program creation and sponsorship, the show began as a syndicated 15-minute radio show created, written and produced by agency owner Cesana on Los Angeles station KHJ in February 1951. It directly followed The Lonesome Gal, a nationally syndicated radio show in which host Jean King played records and spoke in a soothing monologue to male listeners. The Continental failed to attract an audience and was soon cancelled. Cesana convinced television station KNBH to air a video version, which went on the air twice weekly beginning in June 1951. The show was picked up briefly by the CBS network, where it debuted on January 22, 1952, and pitched its last woo on April 17, 1952.
