The Gauntlet is a 2001 fantasy action brickfilm by Jay Silver. It follows the story of a prisoner who goes through great trials to escape his prison. It is set to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" composed by Edvard Grieg, and it was originally conceived for the Classical Movie Contest on Brickfilms.com but was not finished in time for the deadline. It was the first brickfilm publicly released by Jay Silver, who had been occasionally dabbling with brickfilming in prior years. The Gauntlet is regarded as a classic in brickfilming.
Four-dimensional quaternions (fractals) are visualized by projecting them into three-dimensional space. Instead of modeling objects of human imagination the realm of mathematics is explored. Only the variables of one formula (x[n+1]=x[n]^p-c) were changed. It took me about a year to get an idea of the transformations and shapes which could be expressed by this formula. Almost another year was needed to render the sequences which I decided to use.

In different times and places: a man loses his mother; two girls find each other during WWII; a thorn grows out of a hearts hatred; a horse-jumping champion finds herself captive; two primitives re-discover one another, before language. All their experiences converge into a single story, that of human existence, and its all about learning to ride these emotions, finally moving on. A horse, symbol of strength and freedom, appears in every chapter, guiding the transformation, carrying a deeper meaning.
