This presentation of 'Waterloo', a film by Karl Grune about the last hurrah of Napoleon, is a fascinating companion to the Abel Gance epic 'Napoleon'. 'Waterloo' presents a tale of several people involved in the final battle. Napoleon and Wellington, of course, but also the Austrian general Blutcher (who is seen as a ladies' man - his scene with a flirty Countess about halfway through the film is priceless; as are his touching scenes with his plain wife (who he imagines to be a young and nubile girl when they get romantic) and some people within his regiment. Not simply a film of war, 'Waterloo' is a story of people, of lovers, of lost opportunities.

Camp commandant Major Nagasaki appoints collaborators, tortures and exposes dissenters, and uses a comfort woman to bribe Liu. When guerrilla agent Zhang Mazi is executed, Meng and Zhang Dielong sacrifice themselves under blistering sun to save their comrades. Amid bayonet executions and armed revolt, the prisoners wage a final, desperate battle to smash the camp gates and reclaim their freedom.

The film follows Humayun’s rise to the throne, his struggles to maintain the empire, and his conflicts with rivals—especially Sher Shah Suri, who defeats him and forces him into exile. When a German is killed in the last days of the war, the village is threatened with total destruction unless the murderer is handed over. The villagers decide to hand over the idiot.
