Shongram (struggle) is a romantic drama set during the 1971 liberation struggle of Bangladesh. A British Bengali on his death bed is interviewed by a daring London reporter, where four decades later, Karim is able to recall and finally share his past. We are transported to 1971, when Bangladesh was still East Pakistan and a young Karim (a Muslim) is in love with a beautiful Asha (a Hindu). The peaceful village life is suddenly interrupted by war and Karim must grow up fast to survive in an era where mass killings and abduction was common. He must also carry out his duty and revenge before he can finally search for Asha.
Lt. Franta Slama is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who is assigned to train a promising young flier, Karel Vojtisek, and they soon become friends. Ukraine during the German occupation in 1943. 12-year-old orphan Mitka earns a living in a tavern under a false name by playing music every night for the mainly German guests. Theatrical Inka - Danuta Siedzikówna - survived the death of her mother, who was murdered by the Gestapo in Bialystok in 1943. Her father died in Tehran after leaving a Soviet gulag. The orphaned sisters, Inka and her siblings, were raised by their grandmother. The heroine was an AK nurse. She was sentenced to death for joining the unit of Major Szendzielarz alias Łupaszko, which was subordinate to the legal authorities of the Republic of Poland in exile. The judges relied on false testimony from militiamen, which, by the way, did not fully incriminate her. In a secret message to her grandmother, Siedzikówna wrote: "Tell my grandmother that I behaved as I should."
Lieve is a Belgian woman who marries just as World War II is beginning. When the Germans invade, her husband goes off to fight them, but he swiftly returns home after the invasion succeeds. Later, he decides that the Germans are on the right side of things, and goes off to fight for them on the Eastern Front. Soon afterward, a resistance fighter is stranded on her doorway, and she hides him. The two of them fall in love, and the conflicts and joys of this relationship cause Lieve continued grief well after the end of the war.
